Government and Corporates aid in donating sanitary wear to young women.
In an initiative to aid young women in the plight to attain basic sanitary wear, at least 21 400 school girls from Mashonaland West province received sanitary wear and soap tablets from the Government through the Primary and Secondary Education Ministry.
The first lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa also visited Zengeza 2 to distribute reusable sanitary wear last month. The young girls previously received sewing machines from the her sew reusable pads earlier in the year under the Angel of Hope Foundation.
“These girls sew many pads and when I asked them whether they would use all by themselves, they told me that they intended to share with their peers from neighbouring schools,” she said.
The government has also availed over USD15, 8 million to the province towards the procurement and distribution of the second batch of sanitary wear.
The Period Company in partnership with Minerva Risk Advisors has also joined the initiative by embarking on a sanitary pads campaign to aid under-privileged women and girls in various communities.
The two firms started donating sanitary pads to designated areas like Mbare in Harare, Chitungwiza, Domboshava and Epworth earlier this year. Over 8 000 women and girls were targeted to benefit from the campaign.
Zimbabwe has joined South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and other African countries to provide free sanitary towels to school girls, who cannot afford to buy them.
