Harare’s main water sources under upgrading
Harare’s main water sources, Morton Jaffray and Warren Control waters are being upgraded using allocated devolution funds, three pumps at Warren Control are in the process of being commissioned out of the fourteen pumps set to be replaced and at Morton Jaffray, the Darwendale pumps are being replaced.
The citizens of Harare have had to look for alternate sources of water due to dirty and smelly water provided by the council. This new trajectory being done by the Council with funds from the Government will improve access to potable water.
Residents report of how Harare water is contaminated but the council identifies it as clean and safe, some residents would see slime gathered at the bottom of fetched water after it had settled leading them to source for clean water from boreholes or using water purifiers.
The Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Works are located below Lake Chivero, outside Harare. The facility comprises three plants constructed between 1952 and 1994 and maintenance has not been done effectively over the years. Also, the water works were initially not intended to service the current population which has grown significantly since its construction.
The council is looking to complete these projects by the first half of 2022 if everything goes according to plan.
