Local tourism cost still high
The Zimbabwean tourism sector took a blow after the advent of COVID-19 and players in this industry are adapting as fast as they can to the everchanging and volatile condition they are in. The recent travel ban by European countries and the US has affected one of the sector’s busiest seasons. This came as no surprise and is a blow, leading to players’ need to attract the domestic tourist.
Local travel agents have packages for local tourists but it seems like a majority of these packages are suitable for the high-end clients as their prices are out of reach for the majority of locals. Accommodation, meals, activities for at least two nights will set back a couple USD300 at least, considering the current economic situation in the country, this is expensive for the majority of Zimbabweans.
Traveling is viewed as a luxury but it should be a necessity as it helps people re-boot, relax and take a breath from their demanding daily lives. This not only helps them relax it also makes them more productive when they go back to their busy schedules.
It is important to mention that, in comparison with travel costs before the pandemic, travel packages have gone lower but still out of reach for a number of people. Zimbabwe is endowed with beautiful scenery which is relaxing and calming and everyone should have an opportunity to experience it.
There is need for price adjustments to accommodate the ordinary Zimbabwean who wants to explore their homeland in a comfortable and safe environment. Majority of these travel agents are now accepting payment in installments for holidays for local tourists and with the right amount of marketing this might provide the much needed boost by the tourism industry.
