THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MAKES STRIDES WITH NEW PROGRAM
By Staff Reporter
The government has made significant strides in the education sector through the introduction of the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALA) through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
In general terms, CALA refers to various learning activities and assessments that expect students to conduct detailed research-based initiatives in specific areas where they incorporate practical activities such as data collection through interviews, questionnaires, checklists, observations and experiments.
This is a breakaway from the old cramming system where students just had to cram for an examination, without actually going through a learning curve.
Speaking at an event to confer the Secretary’s Bell Award to Maranatha Adventist Primary School in Bulawayo today, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs Tumisang Thabela said CALA has broadened the scope of learning in Zimbabwe.
She said the portfolios have passed through all moderations and her ministry is confident of realising its vision.
Mrs Thabela also applauded Maranatha Adventist Primary School for continuously achieving a 100 percent pass rate for the past five consecutive years.
CALA implementation is now policy for all primary and secondary schools in Zimbabwe. Learners should do 3 CALA components per learning area
