SECOND REPUBLIC COMMENDED FOR ALLEVIATING THE PLIGHT OF WOMEN
The Second Republic has been commended for working to alleviate the challenges that women face in
their day to day lives.
Speaking during a symposium held against gender based violence which also saw the participation of
the United Nations in Harare yesterday, representatives from women’s organisations said although the
girlchild still faces challenges, there has been a marked change of political will towards addressing these
challenges.
Coalition of Zimbabwe humanitarian cluster leader, Dr Rita Nyamupinga said there is need to
continously engage the government especially on the enactment of laws that protect women from
gender based violence.
Dr Nyamupinga also spoke on the need for the courts to be more urgent in dealing with gender based
violence against women.
She also urged the government to capacitate commissions such as the Zimbabwe Gender Commission
to effectively execute their constitutional mandate.
The Second Republic has repeatedly reiterated its dedication to alleviating women’s issues with
President Emmerson Mnangagwa launching the spotlight initiative high level political compact, a
strategic initiative for an active response towards the elimination of gender based violence, in October
this year.
