GOVERNMENT ON MASSIVE NRZ RECAPITALIZATION DRIVE
Staff Reporter
Although many have written off the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) as a defunct parastatal in the country, it continues to put in place measures to not only remain operational but improve its efficiency as a reliable transport provider.
The government has embarked on a huge recapitalization drive for the NRZ which led to a two billion Zimbabwean dollar allocation in the 2022 national budget towards the upgrading of critical railway infrastructure.
The parastatal has also embarked on import substitution inventions, which have reduced the country’s import bill by at least 600 thousand United States dollars.
The NRZ also invented a load bank and is converting locomotives to mainline operations after they had been limited to shorter distances.
NRZ acting public relations manager Mr Martin Banda said the inventions at the parastatal have helped to save the organization thousands of dollars.
