Crops planted under the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme are looking healthy and a good harvest is likely to be achieved in the 2021/2022 cropping season.
This came out during an assessment of crops that were planted under the Pfumvudza/ Intwasa programme in the Kwekwe to Gokwe North area.
“The crops have done exceedingly well. All the crops are looking excellent. My expectation is that the province and the country will have sufficient food to feed ourselves for the year. So, this is indeed a very pleasing achievement. It shows that farming can be a business and it is indeed transforming the face of agriculture,” said the Minister for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Masuka who was part of the assessment team.
Dr Masuka said although most farmers in Gokwe had a false start to the season due to delays in the onset of the rain season, they managed to pick up the pieces and replanted.
He said most farmers are looking forward to improved yields per hectare as they anticipate maximum benefits from their efforts.
Last year, President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme in Chief Nenyunga’s area, on a day that also witnessed the introduction of Pfumvudza Cotton for the first time.
